The Rise of Dark Mode: Enhancing Functionality and Aesthetics in UI/UX Design

As you might have noticed, enovatika has a new Dark Mode function. Cool, right, but why is Dark Mode so relevant and important in the design and User Experience world, and why did we want it for our website? We’ll tell you all about it today.

Let us start by defining Dark Mode: a display setting for user interfaces characterized by lighter text or other UI elements on a dark-colored background. Dark interfaces have gained popularity in recent years, and this design trend is here to stay, but what makes it so special?

Why Dark Mode is Worth Using

Besides the sleek and modern aesthetic that appeals to many users and evokes luxury and sophistication, dark mode is especially beneficial for the eyes in low-light or nighttime environments. Even though there is no scientific consensus that dark mode reduces eye strain and fatigue, users report being able to use their devices for longer periods with fewer negative effects with the help of this function.
The darker color scheme minimizes the light emitted by the screen, resulting in less harshness on the eyes. This can be particularly beneficial for users who spend extended periods in front of screens, such as developers, designers, and content creators.
Additionally, dark interfaces can enhance the visual experience for certain types of content. They provide a high contrast between the interface and the content, making images, videos, and other media elements stand out more effectively. This can be especially advantageous for applications focusing on visual content, such as photo editing software or video streaming platforms. However, there’s a catch: too much contrast causes eye strain, so avoiding using pure-white text on pure-dark backgrounds is best.
Another perk of dark interfaces is their ability to reduce blue light. The infamous blue light has been shown to disrupt sleeping patterns by suppressing melatonin secretion. Using dark mode hours before bedtime reduces blue light exposure, thus benefiting the users' health.
Dark interfaces can be especially useful for devices with OLED screens. OLED contains millions of individual lighted diodes, and instead of using backlighting, each diode will light when needed. In dark mode, these diodes are switched off, thereby saving power. So if you have a device with an OLED screen and you want to save your battery life, switching to dark mode can help you reduce energy consumption.

The Dark Side of Dark Mode

There are two sides to every coin, and dark mode makes no exception. One significant challenge is legibility and readability, especially for lengthy textual content. Light-colored text on a dark background can sometimes be harder to read and cause strain, particularly for users with visual impairments or conditions like dyslexia. It's crucial to ensure appropriate contrast levels and use fonts that maintain readability in dark interfaces.
Another consideration is the potential impact on accessibility. Dark interfaces might not be suitable for all users, particularly those with sensitivity to high contrast or who rely on screen readers or other assistive technologies. It's important to conduct thorough user testing and accessibility audits to ensure that the dark interface does not create barriers for certain user groups.

Best practices for Dark Mode

Before deciding to implement Dark Mode, we did a deep dive into industry best practices for implementing dark interfaces. Here are some key points to consider:
  • Aim for a balance between aesthetics and usability: experiment with different color schemes, prioritize readability, and find the sweet spot for the contrast between text and background elements
  • Conduct user testing to validate the effectiveness of your design and accessibility in various contexts and environments
  • Offer the option to switch between light and dark themes so that users can apply these interfaces according to their needs and preferences.
Ultimately, the decision to use a light or dark interface should be based on the specific context, user requirements, and the application's or website's goals. Careful consideration, user testing, and adherence to accessibility guidelines are key to creating visually appealing and user-friendly interfaces.

Why we chose to implement Dark Mode

Since enovatika’s inception, we have focused on delivering sleek, bold, and visually appealing designs. We are big fans of minimalism and true believers of “less is more.” We also appreciate design trends that bring real value not only to our brand but to our audience as well.
We chose to integrate dark mode on our website because we love the aesthetics dark interfaces bring: a sleek minimalism that allows key elements and messaging to shine through without distractions.
Dark interfaces are an excellent backdrop for showcasing our content: images and graphics become the focal points on the page when they are displayed on a darker background. This is especially important for our work as a digital agency: our strong points are the visuals, so we want to emphasize and make them stand out in all of their glory.
As UI/UX geeks, user experience is extremely important to us. Integrating a dark mode function adds another layer of functionality and improves the user experience for many users who prefer dark interfaces. Having seen the rise in popularity of this design choice, we believe it is important to offer users the choice to switch between light and dark interfaces, depending on their preferences.
That being said, we invite you to try out the new Dark Mode. You can find the toggle in the top menu, right corner. We are curious to hear from you – what do you prefer? What works for you?
If you dream of a dark mode function for your website, let us know! We’d love to help you make the most out of this cool & useful design function.
